Thanks to computer simulations, a team of researchers discovered the origin of a curious formation of dust that surrounds the star HD142527. Among the scientists is Nicolás Cuello, postdoctoral researcher and professor Jorge Cuadra, both of the Instituto de Astrofísica UC.
The Institute of Astrophysics of Pontificia Universidad Catolica (IA-PUC) and the Center of Astro-Engineering of the Universidad Catolica (AIUC) invite applications for sponsoring postdoctoral research fellowships in the areas of observational, theoretical, computational astrophysics and/or instrumentation to work either on existing projects or in close collaboration with one or more faculty members at IA-PUC and/or AIUC. Selected candidates will be sponsored by IA-PUC/AIUC professors either to apply for 3-year FONDECYT postdoctoral grants from the Chilean funding agency, CONICYT, or for other national or international grants. The FONDECYT fellowship is expected to begin on March 15, 2019, with eligibility limited to recent PhDs (received between Jan 1, 2015 and granted before the application deadline.
El pasado domingo 27 de mayo se celebró el Día del Patrimonio Nacional y, como todos los años, el Observatorio Foster se sumó a las actividades abriendo sus puertas a los amantes de la ciencia y la astronomía. Cientos de personas recorrieron las instalaciones de uno de los primeros observatorios de Chile.
Este domingo se realizará la versión número 19 del Día del Patrimonio Cultural y el observatorio Foster será parte de la ruta patrimonial del cerro San Cristóbal. Una excelente oportunidad para aprender un poco más sobre la historia de la astronomía en Chile.
Franz Bauer, académico del Instituto de Astrofísica UC, es parte del equipo que hoy reveló la existencia de una galaxia que nació 250 millones de años después del Big Bang, la más distante que se ha observado, y que permite entender cómo se formaron y evolucionaron las galaxias.
Hasta el 25 de mayo estará abierta la convocatoria para que colegios de la Región Metropolitana se inscriban para realizar observaciones nocturnas ocupando telescopios a distancia.
